University Honors Program

First Year Admissions

Incoming college freshman applicants should apply midway through their senior year of high school.

Application Deadline: January 15th 

Admission to Honors is highly competitive and involves a holistic review of each applicant. Students in Honors typically are in the top 10% of their class or have an ACT of 30 or an SAT of 1380, although we are test optional.

Application Checklist Incoming First Year Students

  • Apply online to Cleveland State University application and indicate your interest in applying to the Mandel Honors college.
  • You will be subsequently be prompted to submit the following supplemental materials:
    • An application essay (choice of prompts will be provided). 
    • Two letters of reference are required. Applicants are encouraged to seek letters from reviewers able to comment on the student’s ability to complete honors-level work in their major. 

If an applicant is declined a place in the Honors Program, they will automatically be considered for the University Scholars program.

Please Note: Cleveland State University Honors Program does not interview prosepective students. The college is however willing to meet with prospective students to give them an overview of the program and answer questions. You can set up an appointment by calling 216-687-5559.

University Scholars Program

First Year Admissions

Incoming college freshman applicants should apply midway through their senior year of high school.  If a student misses the lower division deadline, they can apply as a sophomore or junior.

There is a single application process for Honors & University Scholars students. The process begins by applying online to Cleveland State University application and indicate your interest in applying to the Mandel Honors College.

Admission to Scholars is highly competitive and involves a holistic review of each applicant. Students in Scholars typically are in the top 15% of their class or have an ACT of 27 or an SAT of 1280, although we are test optional.
 
** Applicants to the Mandel Honors College must be pursuing their first Bachelor's degree.  Students who already hold a Bachelor's degree are ineligible for consideration.
 
** The Mandel Honors College only admits students to programs once a year for Fall semester.
